With the new year upon us, many parents are wondering when do kids go back to school after the Christmas break.

It’s the second longest school break of the year – with the Christmas holidays providing ample opportunity for quality family time and festive fun. Kids break up from school for the annual December break a few days before the festivites began. But as is so often the case – the two and a bit weeks off has a habit of flying by, with kids and parents having to prep for the return to school come January.

With this in mind we’ve shared the all important return-to-school dates to note in your diaries. Plus some inspiring family day out ideas and fun indoor activities with kids to keep them busy until education begins again.

When do kids go back to school?

In England, Wales and Northern Ireland, kids go back to school on Tuesday 4 January 2022.

The Christmas holidays finish on Friday 31st December 2021. But Monday 3rd January is a substitute New Year’s Day Bank holiday in 2022 – which is why children go back on the Tuesday instead.

School children in Scotland go back to school two days later on Thursday 6 January 2022. This is in accordance with Scotland’s different school term dates compared to the rest of the UK.

Term dates throughout Great Britain often vary from school to school, so it’s advised to check dates with your child’s school to be sure.

With the current rise in covid cases and the spread of Omicron symptoms, the UK Government are asking parents to continue to test kids for coronavirus. This is in an effort to stop schools closing again due to Covid.

Children are expected to regularly undertake lateral flow tests both in and out of school term. With parents registering the outcome of their coronavirus test results online.

“Staff in all education and childcare settings and students, of secondary school age and above should continue to test twice weekly at home with lateral flow device (LFD) test kits, 3-4 days apart, for the remainder of the autumn term and on return in the spring term,” the Department of Education stated on their Education hub blog.

They added that this is to “help reduce transmission after a period of social mixing” over the festive season.

Let’s keep Covid out of the classroom.

When do secondary schools go back?

Community secondary schools go back on Tuesday 4 January 2022.

Private schools, academies, voluntary aided and foundation schools may possibly have different return dates so it’s important to check with children’s individual schools.

As part of the Government’s response to a new surge in covid cases, children in secondary schools are required to wear face-masks again.

An email update form the DofE said, “Face coverings should be worn in communal areas in all settings by staff, visitors and pupils or students in Year 7 and above, unless they are exempt.

“Pupils or students (in Year 7 or above) should continue to wear face coverings on public and dedicated school transport, unless they are exempt,” they added.

The same guidelines apply to those in education in Scotland. Whilst Wales and Northern Ireland have gone one step further. And asked both kids and teachers to wear face masks in classrooms too.

Rules differ in primary schools, where only staff and adult visitors should wear face masks when moving around in corridors and communal areas. Primary school children are not required to wear a covering in accordance with current national health advice.
