Nothing says summer like grilled hamburgers.  I started making these Grilled BBQ Burger recipe years ago, and it is still my favorite way to make gourmet burgers at home.

Let’s talk about what meat you should use when making burgers. Even if you normally use lean ground beef, I do not recommend it when making burgers.  It’s best to use 80/20 ground chuck for the most juicy and flavorful hamburgers.

Next, mix in some salt, pepper, and finely minced onion and garlic.  It is important that they are very finely minced.  If they are cut into larger pieces, your burgers may fall apart on the grill.

Then, add my secret ingredient: BBQ Sauce!  You can make your own BBQ Sauce using my recipe HERE, or just use your favorite store bought brand.

Use your hands to mix everything together until combined, but try not to overwork the meat or your burgers might end up tough.

Form into patties, and remember that the burgers will shrink on the grill. It is best to make them about an inch larger in diameter than the bun to account for shrinkage. Also, use your thumb to put an indent in the middle of the burger patty to keep it from doming on top.

Your cooking time will vary depending on how thick your patties are. Grill for 2-4 minutes on one side, then flip and repeat on the second side.

The best and most accurate way to tell if your burgers are properly cooked is to use an instant read thermometer. I use THIS one and I highly recommend it for cooking all meat. If you want an inexpensive option, THIS one has lots of great reviews! Using a thermometer is the only way to know for use that your burger is cooked through, without overcooking it. Burgers are cooked when they reach an internal temperature of 160 degrees F.

I like to top my Grilled BBQ Burgers with cheese and more BBQ Sauce. My Best Ever Grilled Onions make a great burger topping as well! And You can always buy hamburger buns, but if you want to really take your burger to the next level, try making my 40 Minute Hamburger Buns too!
